This movie shows Royal College of Art graduate Markus Kayser testing his Sun Cutter in the Egyptian desert.

The machine is a low-tech version of a laser cutter and uses a spherical lens to focus a beam of sunlight that’s strong enough to burn through paper, card and thin plywood. Read more information about how the device works in our story on Dezeen.

Kayser also invented the Solar Sinter 3D printer that we featured earlier this month.
